Condom basics

Why do I need to use condoms during sexual intercourse?

Using condoms during sexual intercourse is vital for your own personal safety and health, as well as that of your partner. It will not only protect both of you against sexually transmitted diseases, but can also act as a birth control method, to prevent pregnancy.

What is the best way to use or put on a condom?

Before using a condom, be sure to check the expiry date and whether it has been stored according to prescriptions on this site. From there, all it takes to put on a condom are a few easy steps:

  • Put the condom on as soon as your penis is erect. But as your penis releases fluids during the early stages of an erection already, it is critical to put the condom on BEFORE your body physically touches that of your partner. These fluids could contain sperm and organisms, which could cause pregnancy or sexually transmitted diseases
  • Follow the instructions on Contempo condoms: be sure to tear the condom package open on the side as illustrated, so that you don’t tear the condom inside, and then remove the condom carefully. Do not use your teeth and watch out for rings or sharp items that could damage the condom
  • Pull back the foreskin until the glans (head) of the penis is fully exposed
  • To prevent an air bubble that could cause condom breakage, firmly squeeze the top closed end of the condom between your thumb and your forefinger and then put the rolled condom over the head of the penis- making sure that the tip of the condom is facing up. To provide for semen collection, leave about a half-inch of space at the tip of the condom
  • Slowly and gently roll the condom all the way down the shaft of your penis
  • To prevent any fluids from escaping after ejaculation, pull out your penis before it goes limp. While doing that, hold on to the base of the condom, so that it does not slip off in the process
  • Safely discard of the used condom by wrapping it in tissue paper and throwing it into a bin. Do not flush it down the toilet, as this could cause blockage

Although it is very easy to put on a condom, it is recommended that you practise a few times before having sexual intercourse with your partner. This will ensure that you are confident and that the penis remains erect.

How many times can I use the same condom?

Condoms cannot be re-used and should therefore be thrown away after use.

What should I do if the condom breaks during intercourse?

When the condom breaks (usually due to incorrect usage), the risk of pregnancy is much greater. In such instances it is recommended that the female partner visit the doctor the very next day, to obtain a “morning after” contraceptive pill.

Is it safe to use thin latex condoms such as Bareback?

All Contempo Condoms have individually and electronically tested for safety and reliability, under a variety of extreme conditions. You can therefore use thin latex condoms with peace of mind.

How important is condom size?

To be assured of protection during sexual intercourse, the condom needs to fit properly. When it is too tight it can break, and when it is too loose, it can slip off. Wearing the correct size of condom, is therefore of the utmost importance.

How long can I keep a condom before using it and what is the shelf life of condoms?

Any condom of high quality should have an expiration date. As long as they are stored correctly, Contempo Condoms have a 5-year expiration date, from the date of manufacturing. You should dispose of any condom that has already expired, as after that, it cannot guarantee effective use.

Are all Contempo Condoms tested for safety and reliability?

In addition, a series of highly advanced tests are performed on a selected number of condoms from every batch as well, including air inflation, water tests, tensile strength and forced ageing. Condom Safety

How can I determine whether a condom is safe to use?

State-of the-art electronic technology is used to test all lubricated Contempo Condoms individually. You can therefore be assured of the utmost safety and reliability, as long as you use it as prescribed, store it correctly and do not use it after the expiry date. Contempo Condoms conform to international health- and safety standards and bear the ISO 4074:2002 certification as well as the SABS stamp of approval.

Can lubricants be used in conjunction with condoms?

Only water (like K-Y jelly) and silicone based lubricants can be used safely with condoms. Never use an oil based lubricant with a condom as it breaks down the latex. Lubricants also have a number of added benefits, such as increasing pleasure, easing penetration and reducing the likelihood of condom breakage.

Can baby oil be used as a lubricant with condoms?

Baby oil is NOT suitable for use with a condom at all. In fact, baby oil can damage the latex material that condoms are made of. It is best to use accepted water-based lubricants that are solely manufactured for this purpose.

Is it safe to use condoms in water, such as the swimming pool, hot tub, shower, etc.?

Contempo Condoms are tested and processed within extreme aqueous environments as well as at temperatures far greater than what would be comfortable for the average human being. As long as the condom safely remains on your penis, it would therefore be just as safe and just as effective as when you are using it in the conventional way. When planning on using it in a hot tub though, remember that oily substances such as bath oils could cause damage to the latex of the condom.

Should condoms be stored in a specific way?

Condoms should not be exposed to extreme temperatures, so store them in a cool, dry place (between 15-20 Degrees Celsius). You should also keep them out of direct sunlight, as the latex can degrade very quickly.

You should also avoid keeping a condom in your wallet, as it can easily become damaged or weakened when you sit or press the wallet. Similarly avoid storing condoms in your handbag unprotected, as sharp objects (such as the edge of your lipstick container) can also press up against the condom and damage it. Glove compartments in cars are also a no-no, owing to the temperatures your car can reach while parked.

Condoms and STDs

Do condoms provide sufficient protection against Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD’s)?

When used consistently and according to the instructions, condoms, especially latex condoms are of the most effective in the prevention of Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD’s). In fact, to be as sure as you possibly can of safe sex, it is best to use a condom at all times. This is especially necessary if you are not 100% sure that your sexual relationship with your partner is exclusive, or if there are questions surrounding your partner’s sexual history, health or HIV-status.

If my partner tells me that he/she has been tested for STD’s and HIV and came out clear, does it mean that it is safe for us to have unprotected sex?

Those results will only apply if your partner has not been in any physical relationship for 13 or more weeks at the point of being tested, as the HIV-virus as well as many of the STD’s are only detectable several weeks after infection. Herpes Lesions or venereal warts are often dormant and will also not always appear on the tests straight away. So until such time that your partner’s sexual health can be fully guaranteed, it is best to protect yourself and insist on the usage of condoms.

Condoms and Pregnancy

How effectively can condoms be used to prevent pregnancy?

Condoms are said to be 98% effective in preventing pregnancy.

That means that in one year, only 2 of every 100 couples who use condoms consistently and correctly will experience an unintended pregnancy. So, only 2 pregnancies occur from around 8,300 times that those 100 couples have sex (based on the fact that the average couple has sex 83 times per year).

In plain terms this means that there is 0.02 percent per-condom pregnancy rate. In other words, every time you have sex and use a condom 100% properly (i.e. put it on properly, have no breakages or slippages, and take it off properly) statistically you and your partner are 99.8% likely not to fall pregnant.

By comparison, only 15% of women using no method of contraception in a year will remain pregnancy free. 85 out of 100 women not using contraception will fall pregnant in a year.
